New HP Notebooks: Envy Updates, Posher Pavilions, AMD (Almost) Everywhere

HP announced scads of new notebooks today. I’m not going to try and cover every detail on every model. But here are a few notes on items I found interesting. (I was briefed by the company and saw the new systems in person.

MUSE. For several years, HP has been into industrial design that strives to be eye-catching rather than typical-PC bland and generic–especially laptops with unusual textures, finishes, and materials. This HP look has spread to most of the new models, and the company has come up with an acronym to describe it and other design philosophies: MUSE, which stands for Materials, Usability, Sensory Appeal, and Experience. I have to admit that I don’t immediately gravitate to some of the techniques the company is using, like engraving cases with intricate patterns. But I give ‘em credit for being experimental, avoiding beige-box syndrome, and attempting to come with a design aesthetic that’s recognizably HP.

Intel's dual-core mobile Core i5, i7 priced in leak

A leak today reveals that at least three of Intel's mobile Core i5 and i7 parts should be available come the start of next year at moderate prices. The company plans to head up the line with the 2.66GHz Core i7-620M, which will support Hyperthreading to perform the work of four cores. It should carry 4MB of Level 2 cache, support Turbo Boost up to 3.33GHz on one core, and cost $332 in batches of $1,000.

The Core i5 versions are now known by Fudzilla to make relatively few sacrifices and still have the same Hyperthreading and Turbo Boost features, dropping only in cache and clock speed. The 2.53GHz i5-540M will run at 2.53GHz (3.06GHz boosted) and carry 3MB of L2 cache while carrying a lower $257 bulk price. The base i5-520M will run at 2.4GHz (2.93GHz maximum) and cost $225 in similar volumes.

AMD Said to Be Preparing Radeon HD4890 for April Debut

AMD has certainly seen some good days with the launch of its Radeon 4000 series graphics processing units, but the company is yet to provide a product that will seriously threaten NVIDIA's position in the graphics card market, especially since NVIDIA's latest cards have claimed the number one spot in the highest performance single GPU and dual GPU market segments. According to the latest rumors on the Internet, the Sunnyvale, California-based AMD might be preparing the launch of a new Radeon HD4890 graphics card for sometime in April this year.

As a recent article published on vr-zone shows, AMD has built the Radeon HD4890 using the RV790 core, which means that earlier rumors indicating AMD's plans to release the Radeon HD4970 were incorrect. It appears that the RV790XT GPU will be featured with a clock speed of 850MHz, and an operating voltage of 1.3V
